Cap'n Crunch® is a breakfast cereal manufactured by the Quaker Oats company of Chicago. It is one of many sugary cereals targeted towards kids, and the majority of its TV advertising is aired during children's TV programming on Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons.
The cereal itself is a mixture of mashed corn and syrup, shaped into pieces that resemble barrels (of the sort that used to be a fixture of pre-ironclad sailing ships). The cereal is promoted by friendly old "Cap'n Crunch," a cartoon sea captain whose adventures revolve around the cereal. The the surprise of many, Cap'n Crunch was designed by Jay Ward. The early commercials with the character were animated entirely by Jay Ward Productions. 
Created in 1963, Cap'n Horatio Crunch is kind-hearted sea captain. He was born and raised on Crunch Island, located on the Milk Sea. Cap'n Crunch wears a traditional blue uniform, decorated with his medals of crunchy honor. His ship is the SS. Guppy, and he sails the milky seas along with his first mate, Seadog, and his crew of four kids, Alfie, Brunhilde, Carlyle and Dave. In 1968, they introduced Cap'n Crunch's arch villain, Jean La Foote, the Barefoot Pirate. Cap'n Crunch was voiced by Daws Butler, one of many vocal talents of "The Bullwinkle Show", as well as the voice of Yogi Bear, Chilly Willy, Augie Doggy, Quick Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss, and countless other cartoon classics.
Cap'n Crunch's animated commercial adventures have given Quaker Oats the opportunity to spin off additional cereals based on the original, including Crunch Berries, Peanut Butter Crunch, Choco Doughnuts, and Oops! All Crunch Berries.
